The most common question we get from homeowners considering spraying isn’t about cost or finish. It’s “what’s this actually going to be like, living in the house while it happens?” Fair question. Here’s the honest answer.
Exteriors are the obvious candidate, but spraying also works well on external doors, garage doors, cupboards, and detailed woodwork like skirting, panelling or staircase spindles, anywhere a brush would leave visible strokes on a surface that benefits from a smooth, factory-style finish. Kitchen cabinet doors are a popular one. Spraying gets into the panel detail that a brush simply can’t cover evenly.
Spraying a whole occupied interior is rarely the right call. Overspray control gets harder room by room, furniture and flooring need extensive covering regardless of how careful the team is, and most families find it disruptive to live around for the days it takes. For full rooms, we’d usually recommend traditional painting, and save spraying for the specific elements, such as doors, trim and cabinetry, where it genuinely earns its place.
Every surface within reach of overspray gets covered before we start: dust sheets on floors, plastic sheeting taped around fixed furniture, and masking film on windows, door furniture and anything else nearby. On terraced or semi-detached properties, we also mask boundary fences and, where relevant, speak to neighbours ahead of time so nobody’s caught out by ladders or sheeting appearing over the fence line.
Preparation takes up more time than most people expect. Cleaning, filling, masking and priming often account for half the job before any spray paint goes on. Application itself is comparatively quick. Touch-dry times vary by product and weather, but as a rough guide, most water-based systems are dry to the touch within a few hours and fully cured within a couple of weeks, during which the surface should be handled gently.
For a like-for-like job, spraying is often the more cost-effective option on larger or more detailed areas, since the labour time saved offsets the extra masking work. On smaller, simpler jobs, such as a single door or a short run of skirting, the setup time can make spraying similar in price to a straightforward brush job. It’s worth asking your contractor which method actually works out better for your specific project rather than assuming spray is always cheaper.
We use low-VOC, water-based coatings for the vast majority of domestic spray work, which significantly reduces fumes compared with older solvent-based paints. The Painting and Decorating Association publishes independent guidance on material safety that reputable contractors follow. Even so, we’d usually recommend ventilating the work area and, for anyone with respiratory sensitivities, staying elsewhere during application and for a few hours afterwards.

Is it safe to be in the house while spray painting is being done?
